DOCUMENTS TO SAFEGUARD

If you have to evacuate, you'll want to take hard-to-replace documents with you.

Here's a list of what should be in a water-proof, lockable container that you can grab easily:

bulletCar charger for your cell phone.  If the power is out, this might be the only way to recharge it.  Also get a land line that plugs into a phone jack in your home; cordless phones will not work when electrical lines are down
bulletCheckbook, savings account passbook
bulletSafe-deposit box key
bulletBirth, death and marriage certificates, divorce decree
bulletWill/power of attorney
bulletSocial Security card/records
bulletMilitary records
bulletMedical records (living will or other medical powers)
bulletInsurance policies
bulletInsurance cards
bulletRetirement account records
bulletRecent pay stubs, in case you have to document employment to collect benefits
bulletTax returns
bulletCar titles and registrations
bulletMortgage deeds or rental agreement
bulletWarranties and receipts
bulletCredit cards
bulletDocuments
bulletPassports, green cards
