The Fire Prevention Division is charged with the responsibility of reducing injuries, death and fire loss caused by fires through the enforcement of state and local fire codes, building codes, and through proactive public education.  This is accomplished by a thorough review of all construction plans prior to the issuance of a building permit and continued follow-up inspections to ensure that the building is built and maintained in compliance with life safety codes.

The Fire Marshal manages and supervises the activities and personnel associated with the Fire Prevention Division.  He works closely with the Building Official, Architects, Engineers, Contractors and Public Officials regarding building construction and fire code requirements.  Last year, the Fire Marshal reviewed 551sets of plans for code compliance.

The staff of the Fire Prevention Division consists of a combination of key shift personnel, who are state certified fire inspectors and perform inspections on existing commercial properties to ensure compliance with fire safety requirements.  Last year, the division conducted 618 inspections of existing occupancies, correcting 582 violations.

Be sure to test your
smoke detector regularly.

Also, the Fire Prevention Division coordinates and conducts the Fire Department’s public educational programs. The department provides a variety of educational programs in fire and life safety, injury prevention, disaster preparedness and CPR.  Some of these programs include: Employee Work Place Safety, Residential/High Rise Life Safety, Hurricane Preparedness, Fire Extinguisher Demos, Vial of Life and Adult CPR.
