The Town of Longboat Key has been
diligently working on water conservation over the past few years. The Town
Commission and the citizens understand that water is a precious resource
for current and future generations. To this end, a water conservation plan
has been implemented by the Town and the results are evident in the water
use statistics over time. The above graph depicts the successful results Longboat has achieved! Beginning in April of 2004 initial efforts of the water conservation plan were through irrigation water audits that focused on public education, repair, maintenance, and upkeep of residential landscape irrigation systems performed by Town staff. In August 2004 a tiered water rate was implemented whereby large volume users are charged higher unit water rates to provide financial incentives to decrease water use. This graph shows potable water use by month for 2003 (pink line), 2004 (redline), 2005 (yellow line), 2006 (purple line), 2007 (maroon line) and 2008 (green line). Decreased water use can be seen starting with each water conservation initiative. It has been several years since the implementation of the tiered conservation rates and Longboat continues to strive towards water use reduction. The Town’s ultimate goal is to achieve a 25% Reduction (from 2003 usage) in our water consumption. Every Drop Counts on Longboat Key! |
