Rain Sensor Compliance and Rebate Program

Dear Longboat Key Water User:

Water conservation is important to all of us. As you may know, the Town Commission adopted Ordinance 05-15 on September 12, 2005 that requires all automated irrigation systems located on Longboat Key, whether using potable or well water, to be equipped with a functioning rain sensor shutoff device.  This requirement becomes effective May 1, 2006.  Some of the questions you may have regarding this program are answered below.

What is a rain sensor shutoff device?
It is a device that prevents an automatic irrigation or sprinkler system from turning on during and after a rainstorm. Rain sensors are available in several designs and are usually wired to an irrigation system controller. These devices override a scheduled irrigation when a water collection cup or sensor on the shutoff device detects sufficient water.

What is the ideal installation location for a rain sensor?
The device should be mounted in an open area outdoors where it will be exposed to unobstructed rainfall, but not in the path of sprinkler spray. It is typically installed near the roofline on the side of a building so that trees, overhangs and awnings are not blocking direct rainfall onto the rain sensor.

Who can install rain sensors?
Rain sensor devices may be purchased from any home improvement store and range in price from
$20 - $80.  Installation can be done by a homeowner or irrigation professional.

Am I eligible for the Town’s rebate program?
Citizens installing a new rain shutoff device on their irrigation system may be eligible for a reimbursement of 50% of the cost of the device and installation, up to a maximum of $50, under the Longboat Key Rain Sensor Shut Off Device Rebate Program. A rebate request form is available  through the link below, at Town Hall and the Public Works Department.  All rebate requests are subject to site verification and proof of purchase.

Thank you for making Every Drop Count on Longboat Key!
