SAM is one of the Town of Longboat Key’s public safety warning systems.  The Safety Alert Monitor (SAM) announces weather alerts from the National Weather Service as well as Town safety messages.

The SAM indoor emergency warning unit is a receiver designed for use within cable television systems.  The receiver operates independently of the cable subscriber's TV set.  In fact, the receiver operates even when no television is present. The only connections required are those to the cable TV system and to a 117 volt power source that is backed up with an optional rechargeable battery.

The Town keeps its citizens alerted to bridge and street closures, beach program updates during major projects, evacuation notices, and weather alerts as necessary.  Because Longboat Key is a barrier island these issues are of great importance to residents and businesses.

You can purchase a SAM unit at the Longboat Ace Hardware store located mid-Key at 4030 Gulf of Mexico Drive.  The cost of a SAM unit is under $100.  The unit can easily be installed, similar to a VCR, by connecting it to your cable connector and television.  Operating instructions are distributed with the units.
