Predictions for the 2011 Hurricane Season call for an active season with a total of fifteen (15) named tropical storms, eight (8) of which will attain hurricane status and three (3)  of which will attain major hurricane status.

In a normal year, there are 10 tropical storms, six of which become hurricanes and two of which become major hurricanes, or attain winds that exceed 110 mph. 2010's historic season had a total of 19 named storms and ranks as the third most active season on record. Twelve of these storms became hurricanes, five of which were major hurricanes

Although a great deal of attention is paid to the significant impacts associated with hurricanes, residents should also be mindful of severe weather events that occur year round in the form of winter storms, tropical storms, and lightening events.  These weather systems can also have damaging effects on our property and present life-threatening situations.  We encourage our citizens to take an "all hazards" approach in their personal and family preparedness planning.

The Town’s website is designed to provide important links to informational resources to aid you in all aspects of preparedness.  Whether you are seeking information on how to strengthen your home to mitigate damage, what you need to prepare your personal disaster supply kit, creating an evacuation plan, how to register as a “person with special needs”, or current storm information.  All of these resources are available here on our Town's website.

The Town of Longboat Key continues to enhance our ability to prepare for, and respond to tropical storm and hurricane events.  This preparedness includes training and education of our employees, contracted resources for services such as debris management, mutual aid agreements with other agencies, and infrastructure improvements within our community.  Each year we learn from others’ experience in coping with the impact and recovery from damaging hurricanes.

Additionally, we strive to provide the information and tools that our citizens need to adequately prepare themselves, their homes and property from the damaging effects of weather related disasters.

Please utilize these valuable tools to prepare yourself for the 2011 Hurricane Season.  And remember, although the 2010 Hurricane Season was milder than those experienced in previous years…. It only takes one!
