Canal Red Tide Fish Kill Cleanup
October 10, 2016 | The Town began Red Tide fish kill cleanup in selected canals beginning in the canal north of Putter Lane on Monday, October 10 where the heaviest concentration of dead fish was located. Currently, the cleanup is moving south to north and will continue as long as there are heavy concentrations of dead fish. Approximately 44 tons of dead fish have already been removed.
We continue to monitor the Bay side canals for concentrations of dead fish. Canals are monitored for the amount of dead fish floating in canals, smell, weather conditions such as wind, tides, currents, costs, and the remaining concentration of the Red Tide organism in the area.
All these and other factors are taken into consideration before a cleanup campaign is undertaken. Staff understands that this is a quality of life issue for our residents and strives to balance that in its decision to spend public funds.
