The Town of Longboat is performing a beach sand placement project on the north end of Longboat Key at the public beach accesses in the vicinity of North Shore Road and Broadway Street. The work is expected to begin the second week of May 2014. This project will cause temporary beach access closures in the vicinity of the project.
The Town Commission postponed the 2013 sand placement project scheduled for this summer until 2014. In May 2013, the Town received bids for this project which were 40% higher than estimated. One of the main reasons for the increased costs can be attributed to the ongoing restoration work by the dredging industry in New York, New Jersey and other states in the northeast affected by Hurricane Sandy in October 2012. Dredging industry representatives tell us that this unprecedented amount of work results in a limited amount of available, sea-going hopper dredges and specialized equipment that are needed for Longboat Key’s project.
It is expected that the work in the Northeast will start wrapping up early next year making the equipment available for our project next summer and thereby potentially reducing project costs.
The Town is in the process of reviewing it’s entire shoreline and will be performing hydrographic surveys this summer to document and evaluate any recent sand losses to develop a comprehensive beach project for 2014.
