Road Work/Construction Updates

Below is a list of upcoming projects that may affect travel to and from the Town of Longboat Key. Motorists are encouraged to allow extra travel time, as multiple projects will be underway and may result in delays or traffic disruptions.

 

January 2026

Manatee County

  • SR 684 / Cortez Road (75th St W → 86th St W)
    • Expect lane closures, both directions.
    • Work will typically take place Monday – Friday between 9:00 A.M. – 4:00 P.M. for turn lane, median, intersection, and drainage improvements.
  • Cortez Bridge (East & West sides)
    • Expect brief lane closures and bike lane/sidewalk closures for utility relocation.
    • Work will typically take place Monday – Friday between 7:00 A.M. - 7:00 P.M.
    • Part of the Cortez Bridge Utility Relocation Project (estimated completion Summer 2026).
  • SR 64 / Manatee Ave W (E Bay Dr → Martinique Dr)
    • Occasional lane closures, traffic shifts and flagging operations.
    • Work will typically take place Monday – Friday between 7:00 A.M. - 7:00 P.M.
    • Part of the Intracoastal Water Main Crossing Project (estimated completion November 2026).
  • SR 789 (Bradenton Beach through Holmes Beach)
    • FDOT milling/resurfacing/installing traffic monitoring devices along 4 miles of SR 789 (Coquina Park entrance to SR 64/Manatee Ave)
    • Expect overnight single-lane closures through the length of the project (estimated completion Spring 2026).

 

Sarasota

  • St. Armands Circle - Speed Table Replacement (FDOT) 
    • Night lane closures 9 PM – 7 AM.; travelers are encouraged to use caution in the work zone and allow extra travel time
    • Replacement of eight existing modular speed humps to asphalt speed tables (designed to help slow vehicles)
    •  This work will take about 12+ days, starting early December January 13 (weather permitting)
      • This includes a 10-day period for the new asphalt to cure
  • SR 789 / John Ringling Causeway (Bird Key Dr → Sunset Dr) 
    • Speed Limit is REDUCED TO 35 MPH on Gulfstream Avenue and John Ringling Causeway (SR 789) 
    • Daytime and intermittent nighttime lane closures; travelers are encouraged to use caution in the work-zone and allow extra travel time
      • Occasional nighttime work, intermittently scheduled
      • Follow posted detour signage
    • Temporary pedestrian paths are installed around the work-zone
    • Improvements include a bus-only lanebike lanes/signalsdrainage, and seawall work
    • Work begins January 2026 and runs through early 2027

 

 

Updates and/or any changes to the work listed above will be shared with the community as information is received by the Town of Longboat Key.
