Water Conservation & Drought Awareness for Longboat Key Residents
The Town of Longboat Key is committed to responsible water use through limited irrigation, efficient landscaping, and regulating fertilizer use.
Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD) issued a Phase I Water Shortage, effective until July 2026, due to ongoing drought conditions caused by a rainfall deficit and regional weather patterns, including La NiƱa. A drought impacts not only the water supply but also water quality, leading to increased salinity and algae blooms in our bays.
What You Can Do to Conserve Water:
- Water yards/plants only two days a week, during early morning or late evening hours
- Use drought-tolerant plants and efficient irrigation methods
- Turn off sprinklers when rain is present
- Manage fertilizers and lawn chemicals responsibly
- Fix leaks promptly and install water-efficient fixtures.
By practicing these conservation habits and supporting stormwater projects, we can all help protect our water resources and keep Longboat Key a healthy, resilient community now and into the future.
